Purpose Statement
The job of Lead Custodian is done for the purpose/s of maintaining attractive, sanitary and safe facilities and grounds for students, staff and public providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and building events; minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure;
coordinating the building and grounds maintenance personnel; and overseeing and supporting assigned personnel in the performance of their job functions.
This job reports to the Administrator, Administrative Manager or Head Custodian
Essential Functions
- Arranges equipment and furnishings (e.g. desks, tables, bleachers, stages, etc.) for the purpose of providing adequate arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events.
- Assembles furniture and equipment for the purpose of providing materials in safe and useable condition.
- Assists in the supervision of assigned staff and area, under the direction of administrative personnel and/or head custodian (e.g. hiring, evaluating, input in employee performance evaluations, training, reviewing work, budget processes, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring department functions are performed efficiently and in conformance with required safety and regulatory standards.
- Attends in service training (e.g. custodial training, compliance training, equipment training, cleaning procedures, grounds management responsibilities, safety data sheets, first aid, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and conveying information on new and/or improved procedures.
- Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds using district custodial cleaning guidelines, district custodial resources website and grounds management plan for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
- Coordinates activities (e.g. cleaning programs, special custodial work, furniture/equipment set ups, auditorium/theatre schedules, facility use, necessary set-ups, etc.) for the purpose of delivering services in conformance with established guidelines.
- Inspects school or district facilities (e.g. buildings, grounds, playground equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying/reporting necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
- Maintains manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. inspection records, time sheets, work orders, supplies/requisitions, chemical storage, crisis management data, key controls, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring documentation and an up-to-date reference.
- Maintains strict (or complete) confidentiality on personnel and student issues (e.g. personnel records, medical records, surveillance videos and images, student data, confidential communication, etc.) for the purpose of protecting personal information for staff and students.
- Maintains inventory of supplies/materials, and vehicles as assigned (e.g. auditorium materials, stage and media, cleaning solutions and supplies, make minor adjustments on vehicles, checking fluids, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required.
- Opens and/or secures facilities, as directed, (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, disarming security systems, raising flag, lock doors, turn off lights, taking down flags, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy and/or minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to the district.
- Operates equipment (e.g. stage and media, trimmers, weed eaters, mowers, vacuum cleaners burnishers, etc.) for the purpose of cleaning and maintaining building and grounds.
- Performs preventive maintenance and inspections following the district compliance program (e.g. change filters, oil and/or grease pumps and motors, change light bulbs, change belts, remove blockages in bathroom fixtures, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining equipment in a safe manner and optimal performance.
- Performs minor job related maintenance and repairs and groundskeeping duties (e.g. resetting controls, changing filters, replacing washes and fixtures, light bulbs, picking up paper and other debris, sweeping walks and entrances, watering and clearing grass around sprinkler heads, minor pruning, classroom/common use furniture, fixtures, vacuums including changing belts/bags, lockers, sporting equipment, light bulbs, clogged drains, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining equipment and grounds in a safe and attractive condition.
- Removes snow and ice (e.g. sweeping, shoveling, sanding, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a safe environment.
- Responds to inquiries from staff, students, parents, and/or visitors for the purpose of providing information, taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, unauthorized persons, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
- Transports various items to schools or other sites as assigned for the purpose of providing materials at job site and/or school site as may be required.

- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Education: High school graduation or GED
Certificates & Licenses: Valid Driver’s License & Evidence of Insurability
Certified Pool Operator's License (depending on assignment)
